Dropfleet Commander - Newsletter #2

Friday 16th October 2015

Welcome to the second newsletter about Hawk Wargames' Dropfleet Commander. This newsletter will focus on 2 areas:

1. Why a kickstarter

2. A small visual feast

Why is Hawk Wargames using a Kickstarter for Dropfleet Commander?

A short intro:

Principle designers Andy Chambers (Battlefleet Gothic, Warhammer 40,000) and David J Lewis (Dropzone Commander) bring you a galaxy of ship-to-ship combat, tactical gameplay, and rich, exciting background from the world of Dropzone Commander.

The rules are well developed and are in the process of being fine tuned. It has been key for us to ensure that Dropfleet Commander has a similar level of tactical balance and enjoyment as a game to Dropzone Commander. At Hawk Wargames we are committed to designing great games supported by considered, characterful and detailed models. The design language for all spacefaring races has been developed, and many of the miniatures have been designed.

So why Kickstarter?

After a lot of consideration, we decided to take the jump to plan to launch this product through Kickstarter. We considered a lot of factors, and below is a summary of some of them:

- We wanted to launch the starter sets in plastic from the beginning of this game's launch to ensure we can achieve a low entry point for this game from launch. Plastics require significant investment to manufacture, and we felt and hoped that through a kickstarter, we can achieve the funding we need to manufacture plastics, and manufacture in the UK.

- We have some experience of plastics manufacturing having released the 2 Player Starter set for Dropzone Commander and the 4 starter army boxes.

- Kickstarter was created for the creation of projects and products and as a small business we feel it is important to utilise tools such as Kickstarter in order to grow.

We will be sharing more in the next newsletter about the campaign itself, in the mean time...

Dropfleet Commander - Newsletter #3

Tuesday 20th October 2015

Having consulted the scanners and plotted a course, this week we†™re answering some of your questions about how the Kickstarter will work, and giving a bit more detail about what we have planned for the campaign.

Below are also some answers to the many questions you have had about our plans, and some general points about the campaign.

post-30230-0-94943000-1446044920_thumb.j

Firstly, what will be on the Kickstarter from the beginning?

Following the great feedback from players about our 2 player starter set for Dropzone Commander, we are keen to produce a similar product for Dropfleet Commander. The 2 Player Starter Set for Dropfleet Commander will again contain our two main protagonists, The UCM and the Scourge, and will again include all the scenery you need to play a starter set game with. Visuals for the content of this 2 Player Starter Set will be coming on the Kickstarter. Our plan is that the set will include:

The Full Dropfleet Commander Rulebook, and Fast Play Sheets,
UCM and Scourge Frigate and Cruiser Sprues, (with construction guides),
Innovative Dropfleet Commander flight stands,
Double sided fold out map,
City markers,
Token sheet,
Tapemeasure and Dice
We will also have the rulebook along our choice either a UCM or Scourge Starter Fleet box, available as a pledge level.

Along with these two pledge level options, we will also have a few larger options including some limited pledge levels including a 1vs1 Player Starter Set level, with a further limited option with Kickstarter Exclusive content. We will also have an †œeverything unlocked† level, with everything you want and more...

More information will come soon for these pledge levels as the days get closer to the launch. But, in case you don't want to wait quite so long to find out more about a potential stretch goal...

The Shaltari

post-30230-0-22820300-1446044921_thumb.j

We†™re hopeful that with your help the campaign will achieve its goal. If we do hit our target, we†™ll be looking to add stretch goals as well. Among the first few thing that we would be looking to unlock is the Shaltari plastic starter Fleet! We will have renders and photos of some of the Shaltari ships coming next week, however in the mean time we thought we†™d share a little about this high tech but secretive race.

While we are still fine tuning rules for the game and tactical balance, some things are liable to some change, however the Shaltari mechanics are close to finalisation. Initially they proved problematic †“ how would shields work with the other game mechanics? How would we include their manoeuvrability without unbalancing the game? Andy Chambers has come up with a brilliant way of taking all this on-board whilst keeping the Shaltari exciting and different.

A central game mechanic that sets Dropfleet apart from not just other space combat games, but also other wargames is a lack of fixed range on weapons. As mentioned in much of the previously released information about Dropfleet Commander, Range on weapons = the Scan Range of a ship + the Signature of the target (+/- any Spike tokens or affect of Silent Running).

The Shaltari will have a much lower Signature than the ships of other factions, to the point where they are almost a class below in terms of signature (i.e. a cruiser has the signature value of a destroyer, a battleship has that of a cruiser etc). This will make them much harder to hit at longer ranges. They will also have much lower armour than ships of an equivalent class, to the point where they could be easily crippled when hit.

But Shaltari players shouldn†™t fear getting into firefights. They have a special order, Raise Shields, which hugely increases the Armour of ships. However, energy shields of that size and power create a very large blip on scanners increasing the signature of those ships…

As always, we want players to make tactical choices and we like the way this rule makes the Shaltari different, whilst keeping them within established and tested game mechanics.

Shaltari aren†™t lacking for firepower either. They have little by way of close ranged weaponry, but make up for it with punishing Ion batteries and particle lances †“ and we†™ll be talking more about how they work if we unlock them in the Kickstarter Campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions

We†™ve already been bombarded with questions about the Kickstarter, and we want to answer a few before the campaign kicks off so that backers know what†™s going on. More will be added during the campaign, but here†™s a few we have been asked a few times...

Will you be doing other races, like the Shaltari, the PHR and the Resistance, in starter boxes?

We do plan on doing other races; one of our initial stretch goal unlocks is (as above) the Shaltari, and the PHR hopefully might not be too far behind them... A Resistance faction is harder to create in terms of the background and character of the universe, however they will have some involvement in some form at a later date.

What are the stretch goals all about?

Stretch goals allow us to create even more units and elements to the game on launch, and pass the benefits and possibilities on to you. Ultimately, the more we achieve, the more we are able to put into plastic, and this is the key to this Kickstarter campaign. The Stretch goals also contain a range of things, from free add-ons for all backers to exclusive content that you can add to your pledge. A select number of these Add-ons are only (and will only ever be) available for backers on this Kickstarter, so you†™ll be one of the few to have access to them, as well as getting some free things with your existing pledge!

How will this game interact with Dropzone Commander?

Dropfleet Commander is very much about the invasion of the Cradle Worlds on a planetary scale; each ground combat in the game is the equivalent of several †˜Clash†™ and †˜Battle†™ sized games of Dropzone Commander. However, the Dropfleet Commander rulebook will include directions and tips on combined campaigns, with a specific section including campaign structure, as well as information on how your Dropfleet Commander games could affect Dropzone Commander battles. We will be releasing future campaigns and curating campaign weekends as well, so that players who wish to can enjoy both games side by side.

How many ships will I need? How big is a †˜Standard†™ game?

Dropfleet Commander is designed to be scalable, so that you can play from small skirmishes up to epic fleet games. The system uses alternate activation and the battlegroup system, much like in Dropzone Commander, and also has customisable force organisation in the same way. With this in place, the standard game size should be around 1500 points, with approximately 14-18 ships consisting of several groups of smaller craft, such as Frigates and Cruisers, and a few larger spaceships, such as Battleships and Dreadnoughts.

How does it differ from other space games, past and present?

With Dropfleet Commander we have been very keen to ensure that the gameplay is central to the concept. We don†™t want to take an existing game and just add different looking models, nor do we want to produce a thinly veiled copy of an old game. By focusing on the interaction with planets and introducing a brand new mechanic in terms of ranges and weapons fire, we believe we have married incredible models with innovative gameplay to create something entirely new. Andy Chambers brings an experience of spaceship based games to this project that very few others can rival, and working alongside David J Lewis, we hope the game reflects the best of the old school and the new school of game design and development.

Hawk Wargames are an established company - Why are you Kickstarting this game?

Although we have covered this in a few places, it is important that we are clear about this point. Put simply, we want to bring this game to you in the most versatile, detailed and user friendly way possible, which we feel means plastic models. While we are a growing company, the capital outlay for moulds for everything we†™d like to achieve is very high. We hope that Kickstarter will enable us to fund some of this cost and give fans of the Dropzone universe a chance to help be a part of the future of Hawk Wargames. We are also committed to manufacturing the tools and the models in the UK, to continue with our previous business ethics of supporting high quality UK manufacturers.

I†™ve backed other Kickstarters and I†™ve still yet to receive my goods, in some cases when the products are already in the shops to buy. What stops this happening with this Kickstarter?

We†™re committed to this not happening. As far as is humanly possible we will confirm that each backer has received their pledge before the game and supporting products hits stores. We also aim to allow some time between the delivery of the pledges and the products being on general release. We are very near to completing the development of the rules system and are at the beta test stage. We have sprue layouts planned, and costings have been worked out †“ we have had experience in some of this through our previously created 2 Player Starter Set for Dropzone Commander. If the Kickstarter is successful, we will be able to commence manufacturing the plastic tools quickly, whilst also finalising design elements and expanding on background and artwork. Manufacturing in the UK also means that once manufacturing is complete, our delivery time is much shorter.

What happens next? When do I get the game?

We are preparing everything we†™ll need to get the game to backers as soon as possible once the Kickstarter Campaign finishes in early December. The first step after the campaign is for each backer to fill out their survey, letting us know there delivery information and add-on preferences. If we are successful in our funding, this should go out a few weeks after the Kickstarter has completed.

From there we will begin with production. This stage requires the most time, and we have built in some buffer time to allow for any reworking that is required. Having manufactured a large volume of plastic starter sets before we are expecting to deliver rewards to backers around mid-June 2016. (If we can deliver before this, we will.) What we can promise is that we will keep backers regularly updated with news and visual information about the progress of the production and delivery.

I†™m not pledging from the UK †“ is this ok?

Kickstarter takes pledges from anywhere in the world †“ see their FAQ for more information on this. All you will need is a Major credit card. While we would like to be able to take pledges by PayPal or Cheque, Kickstarter is currently unable to support this. Hawk Wargames has experience in shipping worldwide †“ we would ask that if you have any questions, that you do email us or use the comments section on the campaign to ask about delivery.

How much is the postage?

Postage will vary depending upon the region you are in. However, we are committed to getting this game out there and played, and giving a bit more for those who support this game at this stage, and as such are offering reduced shipping rates on postage (from our normal direct shipping rates). This means that the postage will be as follows:

UK: Free
EU: £5
ROW: £10

There will be more to come soon, but in the mean time, here's another sneak peek:

PHR logo

Following hot on the heels of the Shaltari stretch goal information, we thought we†™d let potential backers know a little more about the last of our 4 major races, the PHR. If we manage to fund the main campaign, we are hopeful that we can achieve the unlock of the PHR plastic starter fleet as a stretch goal, in a similar way to the Shaltari.

Though still in the beta test stage, we nonetheless have the mechanics for the PHR ready and raring to go. In Dropzone Commander PHR armies are tough, elite, and pack a heavy punch, balanced out by having a slightly slower overall speed than their opponents. When designing the faction in Dropfleet Commander, this was taken into account, but created a small problem.

With the PHR being such a high tech race it did not make sense to make them significantly slower than the UCM and we certainly could not give them less firepower! With this in mind we decided to make positioning key for the PHR and this is reflected in the weapons and design of their ships.

In space, mass of armour, technology of weaponry and gross tonnage of ships will not necessarily make for a slower ship when matched with equivalent classed ships from other factions. So while there is an element of this speed comparison in the game, with Scourge being faster than UCM, and UCM faster than PHR, it is only marginal. The real tactical edge comes from player choices in orders, fleet building, and (importantly for the PHR) positioning and ship placement.

The majority of the PHR weapons are found on the flanks of their vessels and while this makes less firepower available to them when closing with the enemy, once they are correctly positioned, they can unleash devastating broadsides to obliterate enemy formations!

This faction requires careful placement from players to get the best out of their fleet, but if they can out manoeuvre the enemy the results will be devastating.

Dropfleet Commander - Newsletter #5

Tuesday 27th October 2015

System checks have been made, the fusion drives are fired up, and by the end of this week we†™ll be launching our Kickstarter Campaign for Dropfleet Commander! Today we have some more in-depth information about the pledge levels we plan to offer backers, as well as showing off some design aesthetic for the Shaltari fleet, as well as some background and images of the UCMF Atlantis, the Kickstarter exclusive model only available at certain pledge levels.

Shaltari

post-30230-0-95439200-1446045497_thumb.j

The Shaltari tend towards less bulky (or †˜clumsy†™) human designs, preferring sleek but powerful arches and curves. Their focus on speed and manoeuvre has eliminated the need for turrets, leading to many of their weapons having set facings. This is rarely a problem for Shaltari fleet commanders as their experience of void combat invariably exceeds that of their enemy, having been accumulated over many lifetimes of battle. Coupled with highly accurate, devastating armaments and advanced energy shields, the Shaltari are as formidable in space as they are planet-side.

Pledge levels for the Kickstarter

We want to make the Campaign as open as possible for everyone who would like to be a backer, but we also don†™t want to create vast amounts of pledge levels that are confusing in terms of what rewards are available.

We are offering levels that, we hope, are clear and concise, but also that provide backers with the flexibility to choose something that†™s best for them. When the campaign is over we will be sending out a survey so that backers can choose any options, bolt-ons or variations they like (e.g. if a backes has added a fleet, which faction it is from).

- Lieutenant
Dropfleet Commander Rulebook and a Starter Fleet

This level includes the full colour rulebook for the game and one plastic starter fleet. You can also add any bolt-ons to your pledge that might be unlocked during the Kickstarter. This level will also receive any †˜All Backer†™ free rewards.

- Commander
Dropfleet Commander 2 Player Starter Set

This includes the 2 player starter boxed game, including the UCM and Scourge fleets, complete full-sized rulebook, dice, templates, tape measure, launch asset tokens, starter battle mat and cluster tokens. As above, you can also add bolt-ons to your pledge, and receive †˜All Backer†™ free rewards. You will also receive all 'Commander Level' stretch goal rewards for free.

- Captain (Limited)
Double Dropfleet Commander 2 Player Starter Set + Model

This limited pledge level includes two copies of the 2 player starter set (as detailed above). This gives two players the option to have a much larger fleet to start with, with each player getting all of the game accessories found in the 2 Player Starter Set. It is also a great way for single player backers wanting to get two large fleets, as this option is a saving on the planned retail price. As with Commander and  Lieutenant, you can also add bolt-ons to your pledge, and will receive 'All Backer' free rewards. You will also receive all 'Commander Level' and 'Captain level' stretch goal rewards for free.

This pledge includes the limited edition UCMF Atlantis model. This is one of a few Kickstarter exclusives, and is a UCM Battlecruiser that is only available to backers of this pledge level or the Admiral Pledge level and will never be available anywhere but via these two levels.

UCMF Atlantis
post-30230-0-23758500-1446045498_thumb.j

The UCMF Atlantis is a Kickstarter Exclusive UCM Battlecruiser, only available to Admiral and Limited Captain Pledge Level backers. We are planning to create other Battlecruisers in the future, but this specific model will only ever be available via the Kickstarter.

The Atlantis will have a special set of rules, which players may use in friendly games. However, this unit can be used as standard version i.e. the Atlantis model may be used in standard games as a Battlecruiser, using Battlecruiser rules. This lets players take part in fun scenarios and create their own narrative games, while still using their special edition models in normal and competitive play. The exclusivity comes from the model itself.

The Atlantis has had an illustrious career fighting for the UCMF. Despite being a prototype battlecruiser and not being ultimately the final design chosen by the admirals due to the huge cost, it is still in service, and has distinguished itself in many battles, most memorably during the Irkallu Depths incident.

Thank You

At Hawk Wargames, we are always grateful for the support we are given from Dropzone Commander players, and the wider wargaming community. We have been humbled by the support that everyone has showed so far since the announcement of Dropfleet Commander, and hope that we can deliver a fantastic game and range of miniatures, with your help and your support in this Kickstarter Campaign.

We are planning for everything to kick off this Friday, with backers receiving regular updates on the campaign from then onwards. We will be continuing our updates and summaries of how the Campaign is going to our newsletter subscribers during the Kickstarter Campaign, though there will be more regular updates on the the Updates section of this Kickstarter. We hope that, with your backing, we can make Dropfleet Commander a success.

Ich lass das mal hier:

"

It is a little past midnight here in London, but we wanted put a quick post up to thank everyone for their feedback that we have had so far regarding the planned pledge levels for our Kickstarter Campaign for Dropfleet Commander. We have been reading many of the comments and posts, and have taken stock of people's thoughts. Due to this feedback, and after considerable considered discussion, along with some other external advice too, there will be some small tweaks that will be made to the Pledge levels which we previously announced.

We will be putting out a short update before the campaign goes live. The rest of the information will be presented live on our Kickstarter, where there will also be a selection of other images and details that will be new to everyone! We have pledge values set for each pledge level, but wish to finalise the last few things, to make sure that final information that we put out to everyone, is indeed that.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and patience - Friday is very close now, so hopefully we can present a Kickstarter Campaign that is both exciting and fair for everyone who backs, and that will allow us to put Dropfleet Commander (and if it is more successful, all four faction starter Fleets) into plastic from the game's launch.

A Newsflash will be going out (as quickly as we can) to let everyone know when the Kickstarter has gone live.

Thank you again!
- The Hawk Wargames Team"

Mein aktuelles Armeeprojekt: 10mm Hochelfen in Fantasy

Mein allgemeiner Hobby Thread: Bodoks Hobby-Wahnzinn oder The Wargames Butterfly in Action

Also technisch gesehen wirklich das was Kickstarter tun sollten.

Update Nr.3:

Project Update #3 - Thank you again!

It†™s been a hugely successful start for the campaign, and we†™re bowled over by the support and pledges from backers †“ Thank you again! As a small team, we must admit to being somewhat overwhelmed with some aspects, but we have taken a step back to consider and update you today with more information for the weekend and where we are going forward for the rest of the campaign!

We are releasing our list of stretch goals up to £250,000, which includes the PHR (at £210k). Along with these, we have added a range of Free Rewards at key milestones as it becomes more financially viable. We will also be adding to the Bolt-Ons listed as this Campaign grows. We would like to restate that timely delivery is extremely important to us, and we do not wish to push ourselves beyond what we feel we can deliver on time!

Throughout the campaign so far (and we can†™t believe it†™s only been just over 24 hours †“ thanks again!) we have tried to be pragmatic about what is viable, and we are now in sight of the PHR. Originally we had expected to have these unlock in week three of the campaign, so we will not have images of the miniatures until late next week. Dave has been and will be working his hardest to get finalised renders completed asap. However, we have put the faction up as a stretch goal for backers so that they know where they stand, and can back straight away or wait until they see the renders of the models later on in the campaign.

We also want to reiterate that this campaign is for funding the plastic tooling and setup for Dropfleet Commander and beyond for the creation of more Dropfleet products. We want to make it clear to all our amazing backers that all funds generated are going into creating even more cool stuff, in enhancing the gaming experience and for securing an even better future for Dropfleet!

We are reading comments and listening to the backers and community, and hope this lets everyone know where we are and what our current thinking is. More stretch goal information will be posted soon, as well as more pictures and videos, and we thank all our backers again for their patience, understanding, and above all truly wonderful support!

Warum?
