Battles continue to rage across the ancient land of Terrinoth, as the Daqan Lords and Waiqar’s Undead Legion expand their armies, new powerful heroes join both sides. The fires of war rain upon both factions and new reinforcements are vital to victory.

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce six upcoming expansions for the Runewars Miniatures Game:

  • Lord Hawthorne Hero Expansion
  • Ankaur Maro Hero Expansion
  • Rune Golems Unit expansion
  • Spearmen Unit Expansion
  • Reanimates Unit Expansion
  • Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion

Each expansion offers a unique way to continue to grow your Runewars Miniatures Game army. The Spearmen Unit Expansion and the Reanimates Unit Expansion offer identical sculpts to those found in the Runewars Core Set, but offer new upgrade cards and enough miniatures to field another version of each unit in your army. The Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion and Rune Golems Unit Expansion offer two sculpts each, one identical sculpt to the version found in the Core Set and one new sculpt, as well as additional upgrade cards. Finally, the Lord Hawthorne Hero Expansion and the Ankaur Maro Hero Expansion introduce two brand new heroes to the world of the Runewars Miniature Game, each with their own unique upgrades and sculpts.

Lord Hawthorne Hero Expansion

rwm06_spread.png

As a young man, Lord Hawthorne’s home of Seragart was beset by a horde of barbarians led by a mysterious warlord wielding foul sorcery. As a descendent of Sir Rodric the Strong, Hawthorne was not one to sit idly by. Though badly outnumbered, Hawthorne charged out of the gates with the city’s remaining troops, taking the barbarians by surprise, and uncovering the malicious power behind the attacks: the renegade sorcerer Ankaur Maro. Though the defenders of the city were eventually able to break the siege, Maro managed to escape.

Hawthorne was knighted for his bravery in the defense of Seragart, and vowed to never again let a foe escape his blade. Now, rumors swirl that Ankaur Maro has made his return as a servant of Waiqar, and Lord Hawthorne rides forward, determined to defeat his old foe once and for all.

rwm06_lord_hawthorne_mounted_group__good

The Lord Hawthorne Hero Expansion includes two different figures for Lord Hawthorne to add to your Daqan army, a mounted and unmounted version, as well as six new upgrade cards, four of which will improve any army and two that are exclusive to Lord Hawthorne. We'll explore the finer details of Lord Hawthorne in a future preview.

Lead the Daqan forces to glorious victory with the Lord Hawthorne Hero Expansion!

Ankaur Maro Hero Expansion

rwm11_spread.png

Few names inspire fear in the citizens of Terrinoth like Ankaur Maro. As a young wizard studying at the Universities of Greyhaven, Maro quickly became known for his great skill and even greater ambition. This drive and disregard for boundaries in pursuit of power became his undoing though, and Ankaur Maro was expelled from Greyhaven a disgrace. Not one to be deterred, Maro soon found himself in the inner circle of dark sorcerers, where he learned the secrets of flesh and blood and bone and death. Now, Maro has found a new home in the service of Waiqar the Undying, his powerful dark magic a beacon of strength for the undying legion.

rwm11_ankaur_maro_mounted_group.png

The Ankaur Maro Hero Expansion comes with two Ankaur Maro figures for Waiqar’s forces in the form of cavalry and infantry versions, as well as six upgrade cards, four for use with any army and two exclusively for use with Ankaur Maro. We'll explore Ankaur Maro more in a future preview.

Seek ultimate power, raise the dead, and overwhelm your opponent with mystic arts with the Ankaur Maro Hero Expansion.

Rune Golems Unit Expansion

rwm04_spread.png

Deep within the ancient fortresses of Terrinoth stand ancient stone guardians, ever vigilant. These monoliths of war are only ever awakened when the need is dire, an only a few Lords and Wizards know the secrets that can imbue the golems with life. The strength and ferocity of these golems knows no equal, scything their massive blades through infantry and cavalry with ease. Rune Golems will stop at nothing to destroy the enemies of the Daqan, only to return to their hidden slumber until called upon again.

rwm04_alt_rune-golem_group__good.png

The Rune Golems Unit expansion features two Rune Golem Plastic Figures, one new sculpt and one identical to the Rune Golem found in the Core set, as well as eight upgrade cards to help you build your army anyway you choose. Look for a future preview detailing the damage these Rune Golems will do to your foes.

Spearmen Unit Expansion

rwm07_spread.png

When the fires of war threaten the land of Terrinoth, the rank-and-file of Daqan form a mighty bulwark to protect their homes, and the spearman rise to the challenge of keeping their lands safe. The rows of infantry clad in the Citadel’s own colors—majestic blue and gold—march as a symbol of safety and security to those who make their home in the Land of Steel.

rwm07_spearmen_group.png

The Spearmen Unit Expansion comes with eight Spearmen plastic figures and two plastic infantry movement trays to expand your Daqan army either through improving an already existing infantry unit or forming another. Five additional upgrade cards for any army will give you the tools you need to push back any force. Look for more information on the Spearmen in an upcoming preview.

Reanimates Unit Expansion

rwm12_spread.png

Though each Reanimate is but a fraction of the being they were when they followed Waiqar in life, the legion of skeletal warriors still strike fear into the hearts of those that would stand against them. An unquenchable spite and unbreakable loyalty to the dread Waiqar the Undying drive the legion forward to destroy anything in their path.

Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion

rwm09_spread.png

The massive Carrion Worms that follow the armies of Waiqar the Undying are not easily tamed, but always prove to be valuable assets for the Carrion Worm Masters on the field of battle. Carrion Worms are swift for their size and inspire fear in the heartiest of Waiqar’s enemies, spewing noxious bile and laying waste to their foes.

rwm09_carrion_lancer_group.png

The Carrion Lancers Unit Expansion features two Carrion Lancer Plastic Figures, one new and one identical to the Core Set, to grow your legions of undead. The expansion also features eight new upgrade cards to improve your armies and crush your enemies underfoot. Look for a future preview for more information on the Carrion Lancers.

Viel besser als out of the box.

Aber grad Neukunden jüngeren Alters oder Leute die vom Bastelaspekt abgeschreckt werden, könnten so ein "out of the Box" System schätzen.

Zitat

The chill mists have an evil reputation, billowing and moving like a thing alive. But the true terror lies within the mist, a dead kingdom garrisoned by undying legions. Though centuries have passed since the Night of Betrayal, no force in the world can sway Waiqar the Undying from fulfilling his vow—to break the reign of the Daqan Lords and recover the shattered Orb of the Sky at any cost.

In Runewars Miniatures Game, you can take command of the armies of the Daqan Lords, using crushing cavalry charges, highly-trained spearmen, and lumbering Rune Golems to break the enemy ranks. Or, you can enter the Mistlands, gather a following among the undead, and swear allegiance to Waiqar Sumarion.

In our previous articles, we’ve caught a brief look at the lore of Terrinoth, hearing a tale of the Night of Betrayal itself. We also explored the armies of the Daqan Lords, showing the units they bring to the battlefield, and the tactics that they execute. Today, however, we travel deep into the Mistland swamps to behold the shambling dead that you may lead to war.

rwm12_reanimates_group.png

A Plague of Undeath

When Waiqar Sumarion brought the curse of eternal life upon himself and his armies, his warriors became more powerful than anyone imagined. All mortal weakness had been burnt away, leaving only the strength and resolve of bone and steel. These champions became known as the Deathborn Legion, and a single member of the Deathborn can turn the tide of a battle.

Even when these champions fall, their legacy endures in Waiqar’s army. Dark priests and necromancers render the champion’s bones down to dust, and fleshwrights and bonemasters then use this essence to reanimate the bodies of fallen enemy warriors. In fact, the remains of a single Deathborn champion is enough to reanimate thousands of enemies. Built upon the bones of lesser foes, Reanimates do not match the prowess of the Deathborn, but they fill the ranks of Waiqar’s armies with untiring dedication all the same.

rwm12_commandtool_reanimates.png

Reanimates will form a large part of any army that serves Waiqar the Undying, and they’re ideally suited to fill that role. When you first look at the Reanimate command tool, you may be tempted to compare them to the Daqan Lords’ Spearmen. While it’s true that the Reanimates are generally slower and less flexible than the Spearmen, they make up for it in several ways.

First, the Reanimates’ melee attacks roll two red dice, which lets them hit harder than the Spearmen. Red dice in Runewars are damage-heavy, so while the Reanimates may be less likely to trigger special abilities, they’ll almost certainly deal more damage than Spearmen. What’s more, you can modify the Reanimates’ attack to inflict more panic, giving you an even better chance of sending your opponent’s units fleeing in terror.

rwm01_card_unit_reanimates.png

You’ll also note that Reanimates are cheaper than Spearmen and invite you to field larger units. For sixty-four points—just over a quarter of your full allotment—you can field twelve trays of Reanimates, bringing an awe-inspiring forty-eight figures to the battlefield as a single unit! Reanimates even possess the ability to replace their fallen warriors with Regenerate. At the end of each activation phase, you may be able to replace a number of Reanimate figures, significantly increasing the lifespan of your unit in combat. Finally, Reanimates, like many of the undead, are steadfast in the face of morale tests. Every morale cards has a trait, such as Doubt, Fear, or Confusion, and your opponent will find it difficult to inflict Doubt upon your undead minions.

rwm08_reanimate-archers_group.png

Not all Reanimates are equipped with melee weapons and sent into pitched battle. Some choose to harry their foes from afar, firing tainted arrows into the hearts of the living. If you’re looking at the Reanimate Archers like a normal unit, their command tool may seem restrictive. It doesn’t offer many options for maneuvering, and those options are only found late in the round. Still, the Reanimate Archers have one thing that no other non-hero unit in the Runewars Core Set has—the ability to make ranged attacks.

rwm08_commandtool_reanimate-archers.png

Obviously, ranged attacks let you attack an enemy unit without fear of immediate reprisal, picking off enemy figures while they’re still halfway across the battlefield. In fact, the power of ranged attacks to wear down enemy units cannot be overestimated. You may even choose to engage an enemy unit with your Reanimates, then fire into the engagement with your Reanimate Archers. This has the potential to shake the morale of your Reanimates, but as we’ve already seen, the undead are accustomed to shrugging off the effects of morale tests.

rwm01_card_unit_reanimate-archers.png

And in addition, your Reanimate Archers can do far more than inflict damage. The arrows of the undead are slathered with grave-rot and corruption, and if you spend two surges on a ranged attack, you can drop a blight token on your target. Blight tokens can be spent when that unit attacks to remove one attack die, but the undead have other ways to profit from blight tokens, as we’ll see below!

rwm09_carrion_lancer_group.png

Revenant Monsters

The fleshwrights are adept at raising more dead to serve Waiqar the Undying, and what little they do not use are fed to the carrion worms that live on the edges of an encampment. As these creatures grow fat on the remains of Waiqar’s enemies, they can be trained as swift and terrible mounts for the fiercest Reanimate soldiers. Acidic ichor drips from the carrion worms’ maws, and this foul substance can corrode nearly any metal, not to mention flesh.

rwm09_commandtool_carrion-lancers.png

Carrion Lancers are some of the most terrifying units included in the Runewars Core Set, writhing their way across the battlefield and devouring any units in their way. As siege units, Carrion Lancers have with a defense of three and a wound threshold of three for each figure, allowing them to absorb a massive amount of damage. They can even boost their defense during some actions, ensuring that only the strongest attacks will pierce the leathery hide of the carrion worm.

Carrion Lancers are also one of the fastest units in Waiqar’s armies, slithering forward with a speed of four, if you’re willing to wait until later in the round. On the attack, you can choose to boost the Carrion Lancers’ damage or inflict more panic in enemy troops, giving you a way to tailor your attacks to the unfolding battle. And like the other undead units, your Carrion Lancers resist the effects of Doubt cards during morale tests.

rwm01_card_unit_carrion-lancers.png

You might even command your Carrion Lancers to spew bile on enemy troops. By using the Special Ability action, you can choose an unengaged enemy unit within range and immediately give that figure a blight token. This blight token can be spent normally, but it can also be saved—when the Carrion Lancer attacks a blighted unit, you can spend a surge to deal a mortal strike, which immediately bypasses the defense value and inflicts a wound. In some ways, this makes the Carrion Lancer a natural foil to Rune Golems—no matter what defensive stance the Rune Golem takes, the Carrion Lancer’s acid can eat through its rocky hide.

rwm01_ardus-ix-erebus_group.png

Finally, the forces of Waiqar the Undying in the Runewars Core Set are led by none other than Ardus Ix’Erebus, a true member of the old Deathborn Legion. In life, Ardus Ix’Erebus was a cold, methodical commander. His victories were many, but often more costly than some might have hoped. When Waiqar’s oath shattered his host, remaking them into the Deathborn Legion, Ardus was beside him, and since that day, he has been one of the Mistlands’ most renowned generals.

rwm01_commandtool_ardus.png

When fielded in battle, Ardus Ix’Erebus is truly a force to be reckoned with. He is already faster than nearly every other undead unit, with his slowest actions taking place at initiative five. He is fast and maneuverable, he can raise his defense at will, and he’s steadfast in the face of both Doubt and Fear cards from the Morale deck.

A member of the Deathborn Legion is rumored to be capable of turning the tide of battle alone, and Ardus Ix’Erebus certainly proves this true. He rolls two white dice in battle, giving him better attacks than almost any other unit in the game. And what’s more, Brutal 1 raises his threat, directly increasing the amount of damage that Ardus can pump out in a single round.

rwm01_card_unit_ardus.png

Ardus is undeniably powerful in combat, but where he truly shines is in his role as a master of battlefield tactics. During melee attacks, he is treated as having the surge abilities of all nearby allies—allowing him to easily blight and smite units, provided he’s close enough to his Reanimate Archers and Carrion Lancers. Ardus even influences your army-building—a dark host of crows flocks above him, drawn by the scent of carnage and inspiring the other undead. While Ardus leads your army, each unit can access more upgrades than it otherwise might have.

Conquer Terrinoth

The undead are coming, to clutch all of Terrinoth in the icy grip of a frozen crypt. Keep your eye out for more previews of upcoming Runewars expansion, and remember to pre-order your copy of the Runewars Miniatures Game Core Set at your local retailer tod

rwm03_box_left.png

The most frightening sound during battle with the Daqan Lords isn't the clash of blades, the winding of crossbows, nor even the creaking of the Rune Golem's massive limbs. No, it is the trembling of the world from the relentless hooves of the powerful Oathsworn Cavalry. Enemies of Terrinoth live in fear of these lifelong warriors, sworn to a baron or free city until their dying breath. The fear is well founded, as any lucky survivor of a battle will tell you of the flash of steel crashing through the battlefield, the swords and spears of the riders perfectly in sync with their mounts, cleaving through whatever enemies stood in their way.

The Oathsworn Cavalry Unit Expansion features four new Oathsworn Cavalry figures, enough to field a two-tray unit or increase the size of another unit, as well as five new upgrade cards for use with any army. The Oathsworn Cavalry Unit Expansion is one of the quickest ways to expand your army and customization options in the Runewars Miniatures Game.

Unrelenting Soldiers

rwm03_commandtool.png

The Oathsworn Cavalry are one of the swiftest units in the game with their command dial offering a full suite of movement options. With the impact keyword, their two charge modifiers will give any opponent they ram into a panic token.

The Oathsworn Cavalry also have two different melee attack options, one earlier in the round, and one later. The earlier option saddles the cavalry with an inability to modify the attack for additional damage, but with an initiative value of three, it will be hard for your opponent to strike before their already considerable attack. Their red melee attack has an initiative value of seven, meaning the cavalry will attack late, but can be modified to include additional damage, sacrificing speed for power.

The suite of options the Oathsworn Cavalry have for both movement and attack make them one of the most dangerous units in the game, and a worthy addition to any Daqan Lords army.

rwm03_cardfan_unit_oathsworn-cavalry.png

On the defensive, the Oathsworn Cavalry are difficult to take down. Their defensive value of two makes dismounting a rider difficult to achieve, and with a white defensive modifier on their dial, they can become a defensive wall, provided you’re willing to give up other helpful modifiers.

The Oathsworn Cavalry's resolve is also difficult to shake, their loyalty never in question. With the ability to spend two surges to get an inspiration token, placing a bane token on the cavalry and having it stick is quite a monumental task.

With the Oathsworn Cavalry Unit Expansion and Runewars Miniatures Game Core Set, you can field a four-tray Oathsworn Cavalry unit for 34 points, giving the unit additional durability and allowing for more upgrade options. Additional Oathsworn Cavalry Unit Expansions will allow you to field a six-tray unit for 46 points or even a nine-tray unit, which sees a massive force of Cavalry have their threat increased by one, setting you up for three damage for every hit icon you spend at a cost of 68 points.

Upgraded Forces

The Oathsworn Cavalry Unit Expansion also comes with five new upgrade cards that can be used with any army. These upgrade cards not only allow you to put up more of a defensive front, but allow other units in your army to strike with the speed and ferocity of the Cavalry themselves.

rwm03_upgrade_cardfan.png

One of these new upgrade cards is Dispatch Runner.  For seven points, the Dispatch Runner Upgrade gives you the ability to cause another friendly unit within range 1-3 to make a melee attack, letting your forces get in consistent attacks with unexpected speed and frequency. Dispatch Runner gives you the opportunity to quickly strike back after an unexpected assault, or to wipe out enemy units before they have a chance to attack. Importantly, this upgrade does not cancel whatever action you set for the unit at the start of the turn, allowing the target to make a melee attack without disrupting your original plans. But be warned, the stun token received from Dispatch Runner can be used to cancel the unit's modifier dial during a later action.

rwm03_diagram_upgrade_dispatch-runner.pn

A Dispatch Runner attached to the Oathsworn Cavalry allows Kari Wraithstalker to make an immediate melee attack against the Carrion Lancer at the cost of a stun token!

Furthermore, fortifying your army with Flank Guards  ensures your opponent will never get the drop on your unit by flanking them, completely eliminating the extra die they would get for engaging your unit from behind. This upgrade is perfect for units that can cover distances very quickly and always have to be watching their backs, much like the Oathsworn Cavalry. While your unit will still be surrounded by enemies, their Flank Guards will completely eliminate the advantage flankers receive.

Adding more trays to units traditionally increases your threat and allows that unit to take more damage as they have more figures to remove, but Shield Wall allows your larger units to gain an additional defense value when they are being attacked by an enemy with fewer trays. Identical to the upgrade card in the Runewars Miniatures Game Core Set, Shield Wall provides additional protection to your hordes by turning their massive numbers into an impenetrable curtain. If you attach it to the Oathsworn Cavalry, their sturdy defensive value of two is increased to three when they are being attacked by a unit with fewer trays, and further increased to four if you use the Cavalry's defensive modifier.

If you want your units to become an offensive powerhouse, a mere five points allows you to use Moment of Inspiration which gives your unit an additional white die when making a melee attack. An additional white die not only provides you the oppurtunity for more damage, but also the oppurunity for a mortal strike, damage that completely ignores your targets defense value!

The final upgrade card in the Oathsworn Cavalry Unit Expansion pack is Heraldic Surcoats  which sees your opponent draw one fewer card when inflicting a morale test, to a minimum of one. For five points, this limits your opponent's options when inflicting a morale test, and means your unit is much less likely to be hit with a nasty effect.

Terrinoth's Finest

While Terrinoth houses many brave warriors, few are as emblematic of the pride of Daqan as the Oathsworn Cavalry. These brave warriors are sure to improve any army they supplement with their bravery, boldness, and unstoppable power.

Watch your enemies tremble in fear with the Oathsworn Cavalry Unit Expansion (RWM03) when it releases in the second quarter of 2017.

Sehr gut gemacht.

Naja mal sehen...

Even the bravest warriors serving the Daqan Lords know to flee for cover when they hear the hiss of the Reanimate Archer’s blighted arrows. Those unlucky enough to be caught in the open are witnesses to a sickly sight as the projectiles pierce their flesh. Skin peels away, foulness spreads, and bones crumble and crack. The ability to rot their opponents from the inside out makes the Reanimate Archers fearsome to any foe of Waiqar the Undying.

Today, we’re looking at the Reanimate Archers Unit Expansion for the Runewars Miniatures Game. The expansion features eight Reanimate Archer figures, enough to field a two-tray unit on its own or attach to a larger unit. These figures are identical to the ones found in the Runewars Core Set and feature five new upgrade cards to help customize any army.

rwm08_spread.png

Aim and Fire

The Reanimate Archer’s command dial paints a picture of a unit that moves methodically rather than quickly. The Reanimate Archers have two separate shift options, an initiative-six, speed-one shift and an initiative-seven, speed-two shift. This, combined with their reform action, gives them all the tools they need to line up the perfect shot and rain death upon the enemies of Waiqar.

If the Reanimate Archers find themselves engaged in close combat with an enemy, they have the option to perform a melee attack, but with an initiative value of nine, they aren't likely to strike first.

The arrows of the Reanimate Archers do more than puncture. They get inside their target's skin, infecting them with rot and disease, represented by their ability to spend two surges to give their target a blight token when they make a ranged attack. Blight tokens can weaken opposing units by removing their die before an attack, and with the Reanimate Archer’s ability to add a free surge to their strikes with their modifier dial, it’s something they can accomplish often. Furthermore, the shambling bowmen are united in their service to Waiqar, and with the "Steadfast" keyword, it becomes difficult to shake their resolve with a doubt card during a morale test.

The Reanimate Archer Unit Expansion features enough models to either field a two-tray unit for 18 points, or combine with the two trays found in the Runewars Core Set for a 32-point four-tray unit. An additional expansion plus the Runewars Core Set will allow you to field a 45-point six-tray unit. This massive horde of archers has their threat increased by one, making their arrows even deadlier and the unit itself much more difficult to eliminate.

Enhance Your Forces

The Reanimate Archers Unit Expansion comes with five upgrade cards compatible with any army.

In the Runewars Miniatures Game, movement and positioning are key. An upgrade like Wind Rune functions as a way to master mobility, correct mistakes and line up your units for the perfect attack. After using a skill modifier, your unit can make a shift action with speed equal to the number of natural energy tokens on the field. Then, they get a free reform action, allowing a massive change in their positioning. This can undo a costly movement mistake or set up the upgraded unit for a flank attack—with the power of the Wind Rune, the battlefield is yours to control, and for only six points.

With two Natural Energy Tokens on the field, the Wind Rune Upgrade lets the Reanimate Archers perform a speed-two shift. Then, they get a free reform action, allowing them to line up the perfect shot against the Rune Golem!

All that positioning is for naught though, if you’re not doing damage to your enemies. Luckily, upgrades like Tempered Steel allow you to add a hit to an attack at the cost of a surge symbol. The fact that Tempered Steel can be added to a melee or ranged attack makes it extremely versatile, and can provide a boost to any unit you field for just three points.

Identical to the upgrade found in the Rune Wars Core Set,  Terrifying Heraldry turns one of your units into a fearsome force, giving any unit engaged with them at the end phase a panic token. For the cost of five points, Terrifying Heraldry gives you an additional advantage when you are engaged in close-quarters combat, setting the opponent’s unit up for a dangerous morale test later on.

Combat Ingenuity allows you to consistently activate your unit’s surge abilities. For six points, any unit equipped with Combat Ingenuity needs one less surge to activate their special abilities, to a minimum of one. When the Reanimate Archers have this upgrade equipped, you can use their surge modifier to automatically give any target of their ranged attack a blight token!

Another synergistic upgrade for the Reanimate Archers is  Close Quarters Targeting.  For three points, this allows units to make ranged attacks against engaged foes without gaining a panic token. This allows units like the Reanimate Archers to use their quick and deadly arrows at any range, and risk free.

Sinister Sharpshooters

No matter who stands across the battlefield, the Reanimate Archers are a terrifying foe. Their dread arrows pierce even the bravest of warriors, and their numbers and mobility options make them a truly dangerous asset.

Rain death from above and order the Reanimate Archers Unit expansion (RWM08) for the Runewars Miniatures Game from your local retailer when it launches in the second quarter of 2017.
